Wine

Suzanne and I never used to be into wine. For instance, once on a cruise we shared a table with a family who were really into wine. They ordered a couple of bottles of wine so we wanted to reciprocate, and ordered a bottle of pink zinfandel. They were awfully polite and didn’t say anything, but we noticed they weren’t drinking much. Later we found out that a pink (or white) zinfandel is considered to be really low class. Oh well.

Later, we were at a crab feed in Healdsburg. They had some Pedroncelli Chardonnay that Suzanne really liked. (We didn’t know it then, but Suzanne was pregnant with Maxie at the time!) About a year later, we went to a restaurant in Carmel and had a prix fix dinner including wine. It was a Geyser Peak Chardonnay that we enjoyed.

So the next time we were up in Healdsburg, we went wine tasting at Geyser Peak. We first tasted their regular line of wines, then tasted the premium wines. Side-by-side, we could really tell the difference! From that day on, we were hooked on wine tasting.

It is ironic that when we used to go to Healdsburg, we didn’t think there was anything to do. Now we know that there are about eighty wineries in the Healdsburg area.

Alexander Valley Vineyard put out a really nice chart about wine yields. It is very interesting to know how many tons of grapes from one acre, and how many bottles of wine that produces.

When we run into an interesting wine (either interestingly good or interestingly bad) we will usually blog about our impressions.
